The Sealey Buyer Guide to Oxyacetylene Welding
Oxyacetylene is a traditional and versatile method of welding, brazing, heating and cutting metal. More importantly, it can be used where there is no electrical supply.
It is suitable for use on mild steel up to 5mm thick, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminium and for brazing, copper and brass.
Two gas cylinders are used, one contains Oxygen and the other Acetylene. These are usually mounted on a trolley for improved portability. Regulators are mounted on the bottles to show the bottle pressure and to control the gas pressures to the torch.
The gases then run through hoses fitted with flash arrestors/check valves. These act as a non-return valve to prevent the flame backing up the hoses, causing an explosion.
Finally, the hoses connect into the back of the torch. Two types are available; a welding torch or a cutting torch.
